Today I tried Dickie's BBQ today. At Dickie's you can choose from eight different types of meat. I really enjoyed their beef brisket, their polish sausage and their mac and cheese. And how many fast eating places can you go and have fried okra?
I thought the food was great. But I have to admit I'm biased when it comes to brisket. I have to come to believe it is literally the most powerful piece of meat you can eat. As most people know, brisket is normally slow cooked. There's a reason for that. Cows don't have a collar bone. So more than half of their body is supported by the muscle under their neck, that we know as the brisket. Cows are big. That's a lot of muscle. This is the reason slow cooking is necessary. The process is needed to let all the sinews and fibers in the muscle break down. Without that slow cooking process you'd have a really tough piece of meat.
So if you want to prove you're tough like the girl who ate Fredericksburg, pull up a chair and try the most powerful piece of meat at Dickie's BBQ Pit.

Stalking Danny McBride Part 4: TGI Friday's Little Secret
The girl who ate Fredericksburg got one step closer to Danny Mcbride when she spotted his friend James Franco, in a Fredericksburg TGI Friday's. It was definitely him, despite his assertion that he was not James Franco and in fact was my waiter who was named Chris. If you want proof, see the picture at the end of this post.
But enough about my future bff's Danny Mcbride and James Franco. You want the secret, don't you? Here it is...Unlimited appetizers for only $10 a person. It's not advertised anywhere in the restaurant or the menu... but I assure you it is true. Through out the summer you will be able to choose unlimited mozzarella sticks, pot stickers, boneless buffalo wings, green bean fries, loaded potato skins, garlic & basil bruschetta, or Tuscan spinach dip... I recommend you bring six friends so you can try all seven appetizers. (Each person can only choose one unlimited appetizer.)

Chuy's Tex-Mex in Midlothian, Va
I was eating like Elvis today. Chuy's Mexican restaurant is a mixture of classic Mexican and wonderful road side tackiness. Elvis Presley is a sub-theme of the restaurant. Taking advantage of that, I ordered the Elvis Green Chile Fried Chicken. They take that healthy white meat chicken breast and bread it in Lay's potato chips for you. Then they deep fry it and they drizzle it with green chile sauce and cheddar cheese. It really locks in that juicy artery clogging goodness. The service was excellent at this chain restaurant that started in Texas and has since opened some 40 more restaurants in eight states. Everyone that worked there is friendly. I must have had half a dozen staff compliment me on my shirt alone. Grant it I was wearing my "Bazinga" shirt, so that's to be expected. They offered fun atmosphere and fun food. Next time I go, I'm going to try a Chicka Chicka Booom Boom or a Big As Yo' Face Burrito. I must say that the food is chain restaurant quality but I still can't wait till they open a Chuy's near Fredericksburg.

Lemon Cuisine of India

Today I had two firsts. I tried Indian food for the first time. And I tried goat for the first time. The place I went to was in Richmond. It honestly didn't look like much from the outside. But when I walked in I was pleasantly surprised. Aside from the wonderful atmosphere, the waiters were friendly and attentive and the food was great.
One thing you must try is the naan, which is a type of flat bread. And Lemon Cuisine has several varieties to choose from. For my entree, I tried the goat biryani, which is a piquant rice based dish. It's flavored with saffron, which to me is sharp, earthy, sweet, and hot... all at the same time. After you taste it, close your eyes for a moment. You might feel like you're in an outdoor bazaar right in the middle of India.
As the girl who ate Fredericksburg, I take my food seriously. The first time I try a food, I want it to be special. A night with candles and romance and imaginary Indian bazaars. A night I'll always remember. Mission accomplished Lemon Cuisine of India.

Pho Saigon
Dear Food Diary,
Today I went to my favorite Asian restaurant in the Fredericksburg area, Pho Siagon. No matter how many times I go there it never dissapoints. If you've never tried Vietnamese food, you're in for a treat when you visit Pho Siagon, located on Courthouse Rd by the Salem Church Library. The people there are so welcoming and friendly. I took my brother today for the first time, he said he felt like he was visiting family. The atmosphere was just that inviting. All the food is heavenly at Pho Saigon, from the delicious fried won ton to the amazingly inexpensive braised quail they serve as an appetizer. However, if you go there, and you must go there, you have to try the pho. Pho is a rice noodle soup and you have a choice between any number of a variety of ingredients with which to fill it. Personally I prefer to the steak (pho tai) over, lets say the tripe (pho sach). For those of you that don't know, tripe is stomach. Yes, if you want authenticity, this restaurant is the real deal. And there is adventurous eating to be had. When you get your bowl of pho there's a couple of things you should know. The first question is "What size should I get?" The answer is this: If you want to feed yourself get the large, the smallest size they have. If you want to feed your family, get the saigon. If you want to feed all of Fredericksburg get the super saigon. The portions are generous but the soup is so delightful you'll be glad if you have some to take home. The second question was posed to my by my brother "What do I do with all this extra stuff they gave me?" My answer was, whatever you want. Served with your soup will be a plate of ingredients you can use to add flavor to your soup. This plate will contain sprigs of Thai basil, jalapenos, lime, bean sprouts, and fish sauce among other things. (Don't let your brothers talk you into eating the whole pile of jalapenos. I speak from experience.) These are all condiments for you to use as they suit you. Taste them, if you like it, add it to the broth. If you don't, then don't. If you like it a lot, add more. It's pretty simple, and very yummy.

Vinny's Italian Grill and Pizzeria
Dear Food Diary,
Tonight my boyfriend took me to Vinny's Italian Grill and Pizzeria. I found their food to be made with deliberate precision. My boyfriend thought the Calamari was the best he ever tasted. The pieces of Calamari were all uniform... rings that resembled meaty onion rings. It was something you could give to a new trier of Calamari if the tentacly pieces are too adventurous for them. I liked the appetizer but my entree was out of this world. I ordered the Hot Sicilian Sandwich because sometimes a girl just needs a hot Sicilian. Am I right girls? *wink, wink* The sandwich looked delicious in the menu picture with perfectly cut red peppers and beautiful clumps of warm mozzarella. I was shocked when I got a sandwich that looked exactly like the menu picture. It was a sandwich with just the right amount of sopresata, pepperoni, salami, and basil on lightly toasted bread. Gourmet level food for only $6.75. If you are any where near Leavell's Road in Fredericksburg, you must try Vinny's.

On my way to Art Class
Dear Food Diary,
I've been busy. Among other things, I've been taking an art class. See my awesome drawing to the right? Well during my travels to art class in Richmond, I acquired three new favorite restaurants. Below are three must try restaurants in the Richmond area.
1) Stella's - Fine Greek style dining.
Must Try Items - The Avgolemono and the Calamari
2) Bandito's Burrito Lounge - A bar restaurant combo that has a variety of mexican foods with a southern Louisiana type feel.
Must Try Items- One of their dishes containing seafood, like perhaps their shrimp tacos or their creole bowl with craw-fish.
3) Fat Dragon- Traditional Chinese food with a farm to table twist and modern exotic decor.
Must Try Items- If you can handle spicy, the Firecracker Shrimp and the Chili Dumplings
Now you know where to eat in Richmond... You're Welcome

Valentine's Dinner
Dear Food Diary,
For Valentine’s Day the
girl who ate Fredericksburg decided to stay in and eat at home. And guess what; I actually cooked
myself. I started it off with a deconstructed Baby
Spinach and Arugula Salad. I
specifically arranged all the salad ingredients on top of the salad in separate
piles because my boyfriend is a rather picky eater and I wanted him to be able
to choose what was in his salad. I chose
arugula because it is my favorite salad green.
It has a wonderful earthy taste that just can’t be beat. I often joke that when I eat a salad, I want
to taste to the dirt in was grown in. I
served two entrées. My first entrée I
served was Broiled Butter Smothered Lobster Tails. I was shocked at how easy it was to cook
lobster. And I even butterflied the
lobster tails, so it looks like the meat is popping out of the shell. I’m getting hungry again, just thinking about
it. Here’s something I found out
too. Lobster tail goes drastically on
sale in grocery stores during Valentine’s Day.
I got lobster tails from Giant that were a regular $10.99 for only $4.99. For my other entrée I served Filet
Mignon. I read somewhere that you should
add some butter or oil to filet mignon.
Apparently, though it’s the most tender piece of beef, if it’s not
cooked right you can end up sacrificing taste for tenderness. I cooked the filet mignon in olive oil and
garlic cloves. The pan-seared garlic
cloves were even tastier than the beef in my opinion. For the side dishes I served Yeast Rolls with
Honey Butter, Corn on the Cob drizzled with a Garlic and Pepper Butter Sauce
and Roasted Chicken Risotto with Portabellas and Asparagus. Ok, I confess the Risotto was Bertolli. It was still good and I had my hands full
with all the other food. We had a bottle
of Champagne to celebrate. After I gave
the toast I always give, “may what goes down not come back up again,” we had dessert,
a Variety of Mousse Cakes with Dark Chocolate Truffles. And yes all this food was as good as it
sounds. Why do I want everyone to know
about this meal? I’m just bragging.

Kiwifruit
Today I tried kiwi for the first time. First I was excited because it felt like I was eating a fruit from some alien planet. I've never been to an alien planet. Of course, kiwifruit originated in China, and I've never been there either. Anyway, when I tasted that tangy sweet sensation I was in heaven. My favorite part of the fruit was the part with the seeds. I loved the texture with a very slight crunch to it. It was better than strawberries. If you haven't tried kiwi, you must.
Since I had never sliced a kiwi, I watched this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHDYDN8Q45k. It's a great video if you're like me and you need someone to help you do something as simple as cut a kiwi. Plus, the guy explaining has a voice so soothing, you kind of wish he was your grandpa.

But an interesting fact is that kiwifruit actually arrived in the United States in 1904, two years before it arrived in New Zealand. The Girl Who Lost Weight

Today I began a 90 day weight loss challenge. 20 people at my day job are participating. If I lose the highest percentage of body weight I will win ... wait for it.... $280. If that's not motivation then I don't know what is. Over the next 90 days I will be sharing my efforts with all of you. Please give me your support and your advice. I'll Have the "Fish"
Dear Food Diary,
My brothers and I visited the Happy Clam in downtown Fredericksburg recently. The food was great. I recommend the cat fish bites as an appetizer and the scallops platter as an entree. The Happy Clam also sells fresh seafood for you take home and cook to your own taste. The food was great and reasonably priced. My only complaint was the lack of decor. The dining room is very plain. The clientele is often elderly, so if you are looking for a nice plain quiet dining place with little in the way of ambiance but delicious food, this is the one for you.
On an only partially related note, I want to take this opportunity to complain about a particular pet peeve of mine. When I look at a menu and it says "fish," this is just as vague as saying "meat" or "mammal." Just so everyone knows Burger King serves Alaskan Pollock and McDonald's serves Atlantic Pollock, which is larger, slighty darker, and oilier than Alaskan pollock which is actually a different species of fish, despite its name. Don't you feel better now?

Tyler, My Applebee's Waiter
This is Tyler. Tyler is a waiter. Not just a waiter. He's the waiter. I've been to the Applebee's at South Point three times. Each time I had this guy as my waiter. He is one of the best waiters in Fredericksburg. If you go to Applebee's near the Walmart at South Point, you must ask for Tyler. He will make sure your drink is filled before you even realize you needed more. And he's friendly enough to pose for a picture. Tyler... he's the waiter.

The Genius of Van Halen
So today I was reading about Van Halen....
Apparently, when they would play at a venue, it was always part of their contract that their room would have a bowl of M&M's in it. To get even sillier, the contract also stated that there should be no brown M&M's in the bowl. Now on first hearing this story you might think they were just spoiled Rock Stars. But an article I read explained the genius behind their method. You see if they looked in the bowl and they saw some missed brown M&M's, you can bet they better check all the other stuff, like the sound connections because obviously this venue doesn't have attention to detail. And they had trucks worth of equipment that should be set up to specification. I found it fascinating and more than that I found some M & M's in my fridge.

Mexico... In Restaurant Form
Deary Food Diary,
Tonight I went to Mexico for the first time. I didn't even have to worry about having a passport. I'm speaking of Mexico the Restaurant located in Southpoint. I thought it was sure to be great because I heard from a friend that they heard from a friend that it was great. The atmosphere of the restaurant was nice and welcoming, clean, festive, and comforting. And I got to truthfully tell everyone on my facebook page that "I'm going to Mexico." So that was fun. However, my big problem with my dining experience was the time it took to get served. It took a half hour after we ordered, to get our food. That doesn't sound like a long time but during that time all our drinks went totally empty as did our chips. And when the waiter finally brought more of these things, he looked disgruntled more than anything else. I personally always have a friendly smiling face so I find it off putting when I go to a restaurant and I can't find the same. The food was good, especially the quesadillas. I can't recommend this restaurant but if you do go, I suggest you order the shrimp and crab quesadillas. It was delicious. I also ordered chile rellano, which is something I order every time I go out for Mexican food. I was not happy with it. To start with, it was very spicy. I feel like if they are going to use anything other than the traditional poblano pepper, which is very mild, they should warn you on the menu. Furthermore it wasn't covered with the egg and flour breading it normally is. It was just baked with no breading and very little cheese sprinkled on top. In the end, I didn't even get dessert because I was just over that restaurant. But I did stop at the grocery store on the way home and pick up a cheese cake. Sara Lee for the Win!
